‘nother old Jeno classic, maybe you didn’t know about..

Lamont Booker aka L.B.Bad aka The Prince of Dance Music, made some quite unique and original house cuts back in the late eighties, early nineties. He’s one of those enigmatic producers who never really played by the rules, nor received as much recognition as some of his contempories, but still produced some of the most enduring house music you’re ever likely to hear..

The guys over at Rong Records recently re-edited and re-released some cuts offa his 1989 “True Story of House Music” e.p. from the now defunkt NuGroove label. I haven’t listened to their re-edit, partly because I’m afraid that they’ve butchered it as they’ve done to some other old NuGroove classics they’ve re-issued, but an original copy of the e.p is gonna set you back over $100 so the Rong release might be a good place to start, if you wanna check his music..

Anyways, this particular cut is from his own label Lahron Records, circa 1990, and is probably my favorite of all his work. Mysterious, melancholy and hypnotic, with a yearning soulful vocal with a sound straight out of a snake charmers handbook. Sounds almost perfect, and it is..

enjoy..

another couple of jeno classics, that…

….maybe you did or didn’t know about..

First, let me take a moment to transport you back in time, to the early nineties. And to the old ‘Big Heart City’ in downtown San Francisco. The place was a clunky mix of Thai restaurant, and afterhours nightclub. Like alot of SF at that time it felt old and kinda neglected, but it had character fo’sure. A few ghosts too, I bet. And it’s large, dimly lit and scarcely used basement, tucked away deep below the main restaurant dancefloor was the perfect spot for an illicit afterhours scene. All it needed was an extra sound system and some enthusiastic folks to bring the crowd and blow out the cobwebs. And us Wicked heads - fresh from doing the first Wicked party at BPM records - were eager to oblige. In fact we liked it so much we settled in for a good while, at one point running two Wicked parties a week down in our new sublevel sanctuary..

The atmosphere was an energetic mix of old friends and strangely curious new faces, dancing away feverishly in that dark shadowy interior, where the only real light was the occasional epileptic burst of a strobe flickering thru the smoke machine’s foggy shroud, or the pulsing glow of the circuit-breaker lightbulbs eminating (on beat with the music) from deep within the overworked and extremely old fashioned bass bins. As the sound system rental company told us - the bulbs were there to stop the speakers blowing, by diverting the power to the them whenever the bass got too loud. But even too loud wasn’t loud enough for us - every week, regular as clockwork, we’d blow the speakers anyways. Oops. Yes it was the perfect place for some moody musical misadventure, and we took full advantage - Ernie Munson, Garth and myself, as we sowed some of the early seeds (and sounds) of the West Coast dance scene that was about to follow..

There’s a few tracks that still stick in my mind from those paradoxically sullen & psychedelic soirees, and these are definitely two of them. I’m not sure if I ever played the ‘Nastyness’ track anywhere else except maybe an early Wicked full moon, so it’s menacing bass and souring melancholy strings bring me back to Big Heart City everytime. And as for ‘Tonight I’m going to Love you’, what can I say? It never left my box for another 10 years. A Peach Boys classic sampled and reworked into a timeless and dreamy garage groove..

enjoy -

kaw-liga..

I remember dropping this track at the last ever WICKED party we did in L.A in 2004. It was probably the peak of the night for me, and a good way to punctuate the end of a crazy era for us - 13 years of wicked musical mischief..

The track is Kaw-liga, and it was the Bay Area’s own experimental mischief makers - The Residents - who in 1986 came up with the idea of matching this ol’ Hank Williams song with a loop from Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean. I’m not sure how it went down over here in the States, but in Europe the strange musical fusion became a minor dancefloor hit, and found it’s place in history as a bonefide Balearic classic..

Along with the Residents version, I’ve also included the original, and a funky rework by Hank Williams son - Hank Jr - that sounds suspiciously like it may have been partly inspired by “Sex & Drugs & Rock’n'Roll” by Ian Dury & The Blockheads..

Enjoy them all..

terra incognita..

“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. To whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes dimmed. It was the experience of mystery - even if mixed with fear - that engendered religion. A knowledge of the existence of something we cannot penetrate, our perceptions of the profoundest reason and the most radiant beauty which only in their most primitive forms are accessible…” Einstein
