Anarcho..
Tonight’s show will be noticeably different. Yes noticeably. There will be no mixing at all, and I’ll be mostly dispensing with the psychedelically tinged, spaced out rock and disco-fied sounds I so often spin on the show. Instead, I’ll be taking a far noisier nostalgia ride into one of the most important yet brief periods of my life -
the era of the anarcho-punk scene.
The anarcho scene was a mostly British phenomenon from the early 80’s, spawned from the ashes of punk rock, and heavily fuelled by the politics of anarchy, nihilism, situationism and a desire to bring about a more utopian world through autonomous living and direct action. It was also in many ways responsible for helping birth the modern indie music scene with it’s novel, experimental and totally DIY approach to music creation, production and distribution, and setting up record labels, which completely ignored the established music industry of the time. Though long dead, and not well documented, the effects of the anarcho scene are still with us today, it’s DIY approach very much carried over into the rave and rock scenes of the 90’s and beyond..
The playlist for tonight’s show is limited, which means a shorter show, so TUNE IN EARLY or you may miss it completely. I will however be padding the show out with some chatter about the bands and music, along with some music from other artists who shared the unconventional philosophical outlooks of the anarcho scene, or had some influence on it - groups like Can, Public Image, The Raincoats, Dead Kennedys etc. So in some ways tonight’s show will be similar to the post-punk shows I’ve done in the past..
