beyond the clouds..
People often ask me what my favorite track ever is. It’s one of those questions that you’re kinda stuck with if you spin records for a living - whether you want it or not - so you’d imagine by now I’d have figured out an answer. I mean it can’t be that difficult, can it? You’d think not, but it seems everytime I’m cornered in the dark recesses of some late night basement/loft party and asked the dreaded question, I find myself totally and completely stumped. Of course it might have something to do with the ridiculously huge quantity of music I own, have owned, or have listenened to over the years. I mean - how could you pick one favorite out of all those great trax?
Well, quite randomly and spontaneously, after 20 years of djing, a mini-miracle seems to have occurred. No, I haven’t come up with my favorite track ever (that would be a full-blown miracle) but I have without trying realised I now have a favorite HOUSE track. Of course I’m forced to ask myself “why now?”, so suddenly, so unexpectedly? Well, I’ll be damned if I know, it’s a complete mystery to me, but it’s happened so I’m going to share it with y’all before I go and change my mind. And be warned I change my mind more often than I change my socks..
So anyways, here you are - it’s the B-side of “Can You Feel It”, the seminal 1986 Trax release by Mr Fingers aka Larry Heard. I picked it up 2 years after it’s release, and still play my original copy to this day. It’s one of the most understated yet evocative grooves I own, and sends me off into daydreaming bliss with it’s robotic groove, video game-esque synth sounds, and cold melancholy strings. Trax have been re-issuing the best of their back catalogue recently so it’s not hard to come by should you decide you absolutely must have a copy of this hypnotic vinyl treasure..
