Dystopian Beatz..

This is one of the many tracks over the years that’s sampled my favorite movie of all time - Bladerunner. This particular break driven ditty takes a snippet of Roy Batty’s poetic dialogue during the chase scene through the Bradbury Building, as he closes in on the hapless Deckard. If you don’t know what I’m talking about ‘cos you aint never seen Bladerunner, then go order it from Amazon or somewhere - the “Director’s Cut” has just been re-released this month with a much improved and better quality digital transfer. Or wait until next year when the much anticipated “Final Cut” is finally released into movie theatres, 25 years since it’s original release. And yes, I’m old enough to remember seeing it when it first opened, a spotty but enthralled teenager..

In the meantime enjoy this taste of the darker side of the 90’s rave scene, and for those who remember my old mixtape - House Reality - you’ll also find it on there..

next show 9pm Tues 9/26 - Keep on Reachin’ w/guest dj Carlos..

Join me this week folks for a special pre-Come Unity Anniversay show, which likely means I’ll be digging out a few oldies for y’all. Wow, it’s been 15 years already, who would have imagined we’d make it this far..!

And to compliment this week’s celebration I’ll have special guest dj Carlos on the show. In case you’re not familiar with him - he helped define the rave scene here in the Bay Area in the mid-nineties with his natural hi-energy and boundless enthusiasm. After a hiatus of several years he has risen like the phoenix from the ashes and returned to his passion - djing. He is currently spinning again around the Bay Area, including his own monthly event “Pangea” at The Oasis in Oakland..

the return of raving..?

These guys are part of the so-called rave revival that’s been going on in the U.K. recently. Having bands at the forefront is quite different from the rave scene of the late 80’s & early nineties that I remember, but that’s no reason to knock it, as in some ways it makes a refreshing change from the endless & pounding blandness of alot of computer-driven electronic music. I aint as young as I used to be, so my interest in this high energy music is only really as a curious obvserver, but if they’re having as much fun as i was back in my rave-days, then I wish ‘em all the best..

rave ’til daaaaaaawn..! ; )

A dj mix - Love For Eurydice..

In Greek legend Eurydice was the wife of Orpheus, who himself was the son of Apollo, and the most magical of all musicians. When Eurydice died after being bitten by a snake Orpheus was so heart broken he descended to the depths of the underworld where his mournful songs of love persuaded Hades and Persephone [as no one had ever done before] to allow Eurydice to go back to the world of the living with him. But there was one condition, that Orpheus must walk in front of Eurydice and not look back upon her until they reached the upper realm. Almost at the surface he lost his nerve and looked back, only to see Eurydice instantly disappear down into the underworld, lost to him, this time for good..

I am fond of this story for alot of reasons reasons, but mostly because it mirrors in many ways a long and amazing love affair I had a few years ago. After I foolishly lost my lover a 2nd time and for good, in order to to help heal my broken heart, and as a celebration of the wonderful effect she had on my life, I pulled myself together and made this mix..

Many of you may well be familiar with it, as it was released on CD about 3 years ago, but for those who aren’t - it’s mostly house with strong african [and some latin] influences. It’s one of the most musically flowing mix I’ve ever made, though it’s definitely quite “unhip” by contemporary dance music standards. But being unhip is the perfect reason (in my book at least) for dusting it off now, and sharing it with y’all..

So enjoy, and viva musica..!

Welcome to the noisefromthevoid music exchange..

Hi all..

I’ve decided to get this blog going not only to to supplement my noisefromthevoid show, and also to perhaps one day replace the djjeno/noisefromthevoid messageboard, which I’ve been running in one form or another for many years now. When I first started the board there was a definite need for a place to share information about my, and my friends, various musical projects and gig schedules, along with other info relating to the sprawling and interconnected dance music scene in the Bay Area. Well times have changed, and so has the internet. The dance music scene here has long since diversified into many seemingly disconnected and seperate entities. And with the advent of social networking sites like myspace and the explosion of blogging, messageboards have become somewhat redundant. Of course there’s a unique feeling of community that exists with the board, that I value very much, so for now I will do my best to keep the messageboard up and running, in one form or another..

So, what can you expect from this part of my site that hasn’t previously been available through the messageboard? Well basically the plan is to share my passion for music with you wonderful folks in a more personal, informative and in depth manner. I’ll hopefully be writing more, which is something I thoroughly enjoy, and also presenting information to you in formats that weren’t available through the board - which means mp3s, and the occassional video too. Alright! There’s also a handful of useful links up at the top of the page, including a link to the gallery of all the show flyers, if you’re interested.

There isn’t much else here yet, but it’s early days so bear with me as I get this journal up and running. Check back regularly, as time permitting I will be posting on a regular basis. And if you have any thoughts, requests or comments feel free to make them known..
